CLIENT BRIEF / PLANNING STRATEGY

The original house was typical of many old Sydney houses. It was dark, run down, uninsulated, cold in winter and hot in summer, the rear of the house was structurally unsound and there was no direct connection from the living areas to the garden. The bathroom and laundry were built onto the back of the house, therefore blocking the kitchen and living areas from the garden.

The new design turned the house inside out by moving the bathroom into the middle of the house thus allowing the renovated house to open up to the garden..

BATHROOM

In the bathroom a purpose designed joinery unit integrates storage, lighting the vanity into one beautiful object. The lighting is recessed into this unit and casts soft indirect light on the bathroom walls and ceiling.

DECK

The deck is an outdoor room with a high awning roof built over. This dramatic roof gives one the feeling of being outside under the sky and yet still sheltered from the rain. The awning roof is freestanding to allow hot summer air to escape and to simplify construction. The architect designed the kitchen as a sculpture. It is also very practical and makes the most out of economical materials

KITCHEN

The kitchen is on the threshold between the inside and outside, the most exciting part of the house. The folding doors and windows were carefully detailed to fold back and dissolve the barrier between inside and outside
