Upper Floor Addition to Duplex

The main challenge of this project was to take a lovely little semi detached house and add a storey without making the house look bulky and ugly, which happens with most upper floor additions. The owners loved the house but it was dark and too small for their needs. We added a beautiful big room upstairs, a new staircase up, landscaped the garden and added a dedicated storage corridor upstairs.

CLIENTS BRIEF / PLANNING STRATEGY

The brief was to transform a much loved but small and dark semi detached terrace into a bright spacious lving space. Avoid the bulky ugly look common to many upper floor additions.

The upper floor addition fits seamlessly into the fairly traditional design of the terrace, looking like it was always there. As Sydney architects, we have extensive experience with terrace renovations. We designed custom-made joinery including a cupboard under the stair, workbench and book cases.

All the custom-made joinery was made from recycled blackbutt which is not only sustainable but incredibly beautiful and durable.

The stained glass windows were designed and made by Rod Marshall and the owners' personal crest was integrated into the final design. We added a big skylight over the stair and concealed the frame so the sky appears to float above unhindered.
