HOUSE AT DRUMMOYNE

We love designing new houses from the ground up and the new house in Drummoyne is one of our favourite 'knock down rebuilds'. The house is organised around a spectacular central void and lightwell and is a very contemporary design.

CLIENT BRIEF

We designed Justin and Hayley's previous home and we were really happy to see them back again with a block of land and a request for a new house.  They wanted a cutting edge design and a comfortable house. The house has four bedrooms, open plan kitchen, living, dining, a separate lounge, study, garage and bathroom on ground level. There is also a pantry / laundry. Upstairs, the house has four bedrooms, a bathroom and a walk- in robe and ensuite. Off two bedrooms is a lovely terrace with a garden and outlook over rooftops.

DESIGN SOLUTION

The design was carefully reiterated and refined many times over and the result is a pure form that is verging on minimalist, but elements such as the texture of the void walls, the playful stair and the sculptural stained timber ceiling add warmth and excitement.  The house was organised around a spectacular central void and lightwell. The stair goes up into this dramatically and the ceiling drops and rises sculpturally up to a big seamless skylight. The open treads of the stair and the voids around the stair on the upper level create a sense of lightness and the skylight and tall window at the back and front flood the downstairs with light. The kitchen is a feature with a big generous area with lots of bench space and two wall ovens, and a view to the garden. The separate lounge has sliding doors to seamlessly divide it from or combine it with the open plan living room. The entry hall has a built in beautiful bench seat and storage for shoes and coats. The walls of the hall and stair void are shiplap painted timber which gives subtle texture. There is a big linen cupboard recessed into the hall upstairs. The house also has solar panels and space for future batteries. There is a protected roofed outdoor terrace connected to the garden and a landscaped front garden. The garage door was made with timber lining boards and carefully built to look like a wall of the house when it's closed.
