The main challenge of this project was to take a lovely little semi detached house and add a story without making the house look bulky and ugly, which happens with most upper floor additions. The owners loved the house but it was dark and too small for their needs. We added a beautiful big room upstairs, a new staircase up, landscaped the garden and added a dedicated storage corridor upstairs.
The design is fairly traditional and the upper floor addition looks like it was always there. We designed custom made joinery including a cupboard under the stair, work bench and book cases. This was all made from recycled blackbutt which is not only sustainable but incredibly beautiful and durable.
The stained glass windows were designed and made by the Rod Marshall and the owners' personal crest was integrated into the final design. We added a big skylight over the stair and concealed the frame so the sky appears to float above unhindered.
The roof was well insulated for comfort and sustainability. We exposed the rafters inside and added lining boards to give texture. Overall the feel is traditional / high modern with the functionality and light of a contemporary house.
Access to the new upper floor is via these stairs.
